Competition Obedience:
There are three main levels, or classes, of competition in Obedience: Novice, Open, and Utility. Dogs start in the Novice class and advance to Open, then Utility as they master the increasingly more difficult skills. There are many optional classes to choose from that provide exercises that are half-steps between these classes. Here’s a brief rundown of the core classes:
Novice: This class is for dogs that have been introduced to beginner novice and novice obedience exercises, but need more work perfecting them. This is a teaching class that will help solidify your heeling, sit/stand for exam, recall, fronts, finishes and stays. This class is for dogs that are not quite ready for the Show Ready Novice class with its distraction training and perfecting of the exercises. AKC Rules and Regulations will be reviewed for the Beginner Novice and Novice obedience classes.
Open: Dogs in this class need to perform all of the exercises off-leash. In addition to some of the exercises performed in Novice, retrieving and jumping exercises are included.
Advanced Dog Training:
Once foundation classes are completed, your canine/handler team will be ready to take training to the next level! Whether looking for competition or just out to refine your canine companion’s skills at home, For Your K9 offers a wonderful community of advanced learning for dogs of all ages and breeds.
